“INFORMATION OVERLOAD”

The Books Tab is a special tab that is only available to Wickerbottom. It allows the player to craft Books, which can be used to activate several events at the cost of sanity. Each book has multiple uses.

	Birds of the World Covers 1000 Species: Habits, habitats, and calls. Call 20 to 30 Birds. Does not work in Hurricane Season. 3 uses. Costs 50 per use. DebugSpawn: "book_birds" The type of spawned Birds depends on the season, biome, and position the player is at.
	Applied Horticulture On the care and feeding of plants. Grow crops, plants, and trees instantly in the summer. Does not work on unfertilized crops or plants. 5 uses and 30 range. Costs 33 per use. DebugSpawn: "book_gardening" Will not cause plants to grow in winter. Will not cause crops to grow when they should not in winter (ex: if used on day one of winter, no plants grow, but crops do as it is "warm enough")
	Sleepytime Stories Soothing tales to send you off to dreamland. Cause animals to sleep. 5 uses and 30 range. Costs 33 per use. DebugSpawn: "book_sleep"
	On Tentacles Let's learn about our subterranean friends! Create 3 tentacles. 5 uses and 3 to 8 range. Costs 50 per use. DebugSpawn: "book_tentacles"
	The End is Nigh! The world will end in fire and tribulation! Ia! Ia! Create 16 lightnings. 5 uses and 3 to 15 range. Costs 33 per use. DebugSpawn: "book_brimstone"
	Joy of Volcanology And the sky shall rain fire! Create 4 Dragoon Eggs  falling at the player's location. 5 uses and no cost. Replaces "On Tentacles" in Don't Starve: Shipwrecked world. DebugSpawn: "book_meteor" Fallen Dragoon Eggs sometimes create Lava Pools on the ground. When Lava pools burn out they leave behind Rocks , Ash and Charcoal. Lava Pools can be extinguished directly with Ice, which leaves behind a single Obsidian instead. This allows Wickerbottom to easily farm Rocks, Charcoal and Obsidian.

Tips

• Tentacles from On Tentacles generally produces more Tentacle Spots than it consumes. They are also a source of Tentacle Spikes, a great melee weapon. The book can be used to build defenses or traps, as the Tentacles are hostile to most Mobs in the game.
• In Reign of Giants (RoG) and Shipwrecked (SW) DLCs, the lightning from "The End is Nigh!" can strike Wickerbottom when used. It is recommended to use clothing that blocks lightning damage, such as the Eyebrella (RoG), Snakeskin Jacket/Hat (SW), or the Dumbrella (SW).
• In Don't Starve Together, Maxwell can use Wickerbottom's books if obtained.

Trivia

• "On Tentacles" is the only recipe that requires an Alchemy Engine to be crafted whilst playing as Wickerbottom.
• The phrase "Ia! Ia!" in the "The End is Nigh" description refers to the phrase "Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!", a chant from the Cthulhu mythos of H. P. Lovecraft.
• The sanity reduction from reading possibly could suggest that these books contain knowledge that humans were not meant to know, similar to the Necronomicon and Pnakotic Manuscripts from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft.
• The Joy of Volcanology is a less accurate version of the Volcano Staff.
• In Don't Starve Together, Wendy gives a very small hint on Abigail's death upon examining Applied Horticulture. She simply states; "Imagine, a rolling field of red flowers."
• According to Wilson in Don't Starve Together, Sleepytime Stories is "just 500 pages of telegraph codes". This implies that the book bores those affected to sleep.
